There’s been a lot of focus on Seth Troxler in the last couple of years and not just because of his colourful and varied DJ sets or his explicit and vibrant productions, but also because of the drunken, womanising persona he has cultivated both musically, and in real life. Unsurprisingly, then, there has been a lot of excitement surrounding this, his first commercially released mix CD.

Thankfully, Troxler invests a lot of that character, that flamboyance and energy into the mix and, as such, it doesn’t disappoint: Boogybytes 5 takes in a whole palette of electronic colour - it balances the lights with the darks, the heavy with the feathery and offers up more than one or two essential cuts along the way (take Troxler’s own intense and brooding remix of Fever Ray’s already dark electronic hit, ‘Seven’; the druggy tech funk of Deniz Kurtel and her ‘Fables & Fairytales’ remix or the drawn-out, sultry and afterhours house of young Nico Jaar and his ‘Time for Us’ effort, for example) but to pick out the parts is to do an injustice to the whole...

Although each track has something to say for itself (thankfully this is not just 15 thoughtless party jams nestled next to each other) overall they say a lot more. They tell the tale of a man well schooled in Detroit and Berlin past and present; they plot a journey through slo-disco, quirky minimal, moody electronica and chunky techno and do so deftly.

Offering so many shades of music, this mix reveals more with each listen - be that another quotable line from Troxler's spoken word critique of cod-shit club-chat culture, a trippy pocket of nu-acid or another dark electronic depth, it's something you'll not quickly tire of exploring. Far from a pallid mix of copy-cat tracks, Troxler's clever layering, blending and re-working of melancholy, acid and beauty make Boogybytes 5 one of the compilations of the year so far.
