If you prefer handbags to horse dust and instant thrills to subtle bass kills, then this latest mix from Cr2 is just for you. An audio document which attempts to predict the big tunes at this year’s WMC, Live & Direct Miami 2010 is split into three discs ‘Day,’ ‘Night’ and Classics so, if nothing else, you certainly get plenty of beats for your bucks (44, no less).

Tracks like those found on the first disc are known as ‘upfront’ house, and that’s a good job, for they certainly have little ‘up top’ to be worried about. Instead, the ‘Day’ CD is stuffed with key saturated moments of instant gratification, pouting melodies and lip gloss synths, all under pinned by ripsaw house and electro vibes. “I wanna go deep” and other such silly vocal refrains litter proceedings and overall it’s a very cheery, bouncy affair.

Thankfully, disc 2 digs a little deeper. Things are more restrained and tracks are allowed space to breath and grow. One or two underground stylings bleed in and out, and the vibe is much more heads-down than tits-out as it was on the first disc. There are deeper, more percolating jams (Filth & Splendour) tracky, techy cuts (Dogman) and pumping, Dutch house bombs to make this the best disc of the package.

The dubiously entitled ‘Classics’ disc plots a line through all manner of frenetic 4/4, tribal tinged beats and pounding, anthemic, balls-out feel good house music. By the time the final track is done, every single pocket of accessible house music has been turned inside out. At least once.

These Cr2 mixes certainly do a job: Like the Erick Morillo Subliminal Sessions series which first drew me into slightly-less-than-commercial dance music, Live & Direct offer those with a pure passion for dance floor antics and pissed-up partying more than enough to get their teeth into. In its base form: they sum up house music.
