On the Record... Danny Daze

We speak to breakthough producer Danny Daze about the records which make up his collection...

Danny Daze is Daniel Gomez, a studio nerd and DJ with a taste for techno who has been DJing since the age of 13. Raised in Miami, Daze is influenced by his Cuban culture as well as others like Giorgio Moroder and Anthony Rother. His DJ sets are allegedly "commanded by Detroit techno and Italo disco" and he has just had a sultry house/disco bomb singed to Jones and Foss' Hot Creations label. If you seen either of them DJ recently you'll likely have heard it, fitting as it does so perfectly with that stable's vibe. We spoke to Danny about some of his favourite music...

First record you bought...

Thomas Schumacher - When I Rock ..... I bought the record becuase it had the Anthony Rother remix on the flip side

Last record you bought...

Just bought an old record on Cutting Edge which was a limited edition press of classic tunes which had been remixed by the artist themselves. Picked it up cuz of the Al-Naafiysh remix on it.

Record you wish you'd written...

Easy ....... Donna Summer - I Feel Love, produced by Giorgio Moroder. I can sit there and EQ the low end in and out of that song for half an hour and not get bored.

Record which makes you happiest...

Obviously anything by Tiesto ...... JK. I'd say Roy Davis Jr. ft Paven Everett - Gabrielle ...... I try and sneak this one in as much as possible.

Record which makes you saddest...

Obviously anything by Tiesto ..... JK again. I don't really listen to stuff that makes me "sad". The closest I can get to that is music that puts me in a dark mood and that's a lot of the stuff listen to.

Record you'd reach for (when DJing) if the dance floor was empty...

If I'm trying to get people on the dance floor I'd go for something to make the broads dance like an old "Dub Version" of a Madonna tune. If there is absolutely no one at the club then I'd be dropping some classic Detroit stuff.

Record you couldn't live without...

One record would be too hard to answer, I can only think of one CD I've had forever. I-F - Mixed Up In The Hague .... I've had it for 10 years and still listen to it pretty often.

Best set closing record...

Lately I've been going for Superpitcher - Joanna

Best after party record...

Tricksi - Point 0 ...... the vibe on that tune is pretty damn dark

Record you had your first kiss/dance to...

All 4 One - I Swear ...... that was one awkward dance. She was at least a whole foot taller than me

Favourite non-electronic record...

The "Outkast - Aquemini" Album

Record which had most influence on you...

I-F - Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass (came out around the time I really heard this nu-skool form of "Electro" and really inspired me to buy my first synth the Roland JP-8080 which has a built in vocoder) ... the other record would be Submission - Women Beat Their Men (the first time I heard this record I remember telling myself this only has a repetitive drum loop and random vocals and it sounded perfect!)

Your own record you are most proud of...

I really dig how this latest Hot Creations EP came out. I'm also proud of the "Unintentional EP" which was released as Seņor Stereo. Can't really sit here and pin point one song or EP though because they all sound pretty different and have different meanings for me.

Current favourite record...

Laid Back - Cocaine Cool (Soul Clap Dub Mix)
