OK, so you may not actually want to know what your favourite DJ is doing the bad stuff to, but as Valentine's themed features go, we thought asking a selection of DJs for their favourite sexy time/romantic song was better than most ideas which were mooted.
The track choices are quite revealing beasts which can't help but say a lot about the person who chose them and, in some cases, their approach in the sack. Anyway, figure the implications out for yourself, once you listen to our chosen track, which is - for pure porno - value...
Sebastien Tellier – ‘Sexual Sportswear‘ is one of the highlights of his brilliant 2008 album, Sexuality. Warm, emotive and lush in composition he weaves the main orchestral part from "A Clockwork Orange" into a beautiful down tempo masterpiece, With a hint of melancholia and post - modern chic, it's very romantic...
There are many tunes that can instigate "sensuality" but few beat the master of sexual healing himself (ref Marvin Gaye-but no not him)... Prince - 'If I was your girlfriend'. Now I am a massive fan of the Purple torpedo, but this song is rhythmically, musically and lyrically sensual; moments of desperation almost but with the subtleties of a delicate production using sounds that resemble dripping water, broken movement and then crescendo!!! Yes we like a bit of that. Prince of course is a sex addict (probably) so I reckon he has a number of tunes up his sleeve...Tim, our bass players fave sexy time tune is "lawnmower death-let me cultivate your groinal garden" a 30 sec death metal tune. Nice!
I’m going to go out on a limb and deliver a house music one here, and not even a particularly old one. If I had to think of an all time valentines one, I’d be here all day as the choices are endless – plus I’d end up listing something probably quite embarrassing.
So, my gut (am sure it’s meant to be heart, but there you go) is telling me to say Larry Heard pres. Mr White “Sun Can’t Compare” – fair enough it’s got a rattling kick drum all the way through it and a 303 to boot, but lyrically and in terms of it’s mood it’s lovely and always strikes a chord when I play it. That’s about as romantic as I get (publicly, anyway), I’m afraid. Letters of support for my missus to the usual address please….
Anyways regarding the sexy time jiggy jiggy track it has to be without doubt Phyllis Nelson-Move Closer. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to my younger days, getting drunk on the sly and stumbling about at the end of our school discos (as they always played this as the final song of the night) trying to pull any girl(s!) not slow dancing with someone and not getting very far(nice one Strongbow!). Seriously though she has a great voice and even though I’ve heard the track a zillion times it still sounds amazing.
Still Going 'Untitled Love' - I got the song sometime before this past burning man, when I'm always in a romantic mood. Clocking in at 109 bpm, it isn't exactly your barn burner - but it's sultry & hopeful, full of melody and... plenty of love. On cue, I stumbled into love this burn with a lovely French woman -- and found that sexy disco deliciousness playing in my head making love under a cloudless desert sky. It's earned it's ticket into my sexy time playlist and hasn't left since.
My favourite sexy time song - I once serenaded a girl in bed with a rendition of James Brown's "I feel good", delivered in a Lancashire accent. If anyone else wants to try this I can confirm it guarantees you won't be getting any for about 4 to 6 weeks. She did eventually forgive me enough to
marry me though :)
My all time favourite romantic track has to be Only Child feat. Amp Fiddler - U Bring Me Vibes mainly because it was the track my wife and I selected for the first dance at our wedding. It always reminds me of my better half, that very special day and always brings a smile to my face when I hear it.
I grew up on folk music and so Simon & Garfunkel were part of my staple diet as a kid and this particular song really touches my heart and soul. I used to go hitch hiking around France as a teenager for my holidays and I always took a an old flat cassette player (how old do I sound?!) & 10 tapes with me for company. The album this is taken from was so heavily played it almost wore out! Anyway it’s the most beautiful love song both lyrically and musically and is perfect setting for a romantic night in.
2 Live Crew – ‘Face Down Ass Up’ taken from one of the 2 Live Crew controversial albums, 'Banned In The U.S.A.', it might not be your most obvious sexy song and rather flirts with one's most horny side (to say the least). Top recommendation for 90s nostalgics and preferably Valentine's one night stands...
